Cape Town and a Bushveld Safari in One Trip: When to Go

Guests on an open safari vehicle on a game drive in the bushveld

Two of South Africa's best experiences, two opposite seasons

A few days in Cape Town followed by a safari in the bushveld is the classic South African holiday: Table Mountain, the Winelands and the Atlantic coast, then early-morning game drives in search of the Big Five. The two places sit about two hours apart by air, and the combination works in every month of the year.

There is one twist that shapes the timing: Cape Town and the safari areas have opposite rainy seasons. Cape Town gets its rain in winter, while the Kruger and the rest of the north-eastern bushveld get theirs in summer. This guide shows you when to combine Cape Town with a Kruger safari, how the malaria season fits in, and how to plan the trip. For our favourite regions and lodges, start with our safaris and South Africa holidays page.

When is the best time to combine Cape Town and a Kruger safari?

The best time to combine Cape Town with a Kruger or bushveld safari is the shoulder season: September to October, and April to May. In these months Cape Town is mild and mostly dry, and the bushveld is in, or close to, its dry season, when the bush is thinner and animals gather at the water, so game viewing is at its best. The malaria risk in the Kruger area is also lower than at the height of summer.

  • September and October are our favourite months. Cape Town is warming up, the wildflowers are out and the whales are in the bays, while the Kruger is at the end of its dry season, with some of the best game viewing of the year.
  • April and May bring calm, golden autumn days in Cape Town, when the summer wind has dropped, and a bushveld that is drying out after the rains, with the malaria risk falling.

Our honest pick: mid-September to mid-October for the best of both, and late April to May for good value and quieter roads.

Cape Town and the bushveld: seasons at a glance

  • Cape Town (Mediterranean climate): summer, from November to March, is warm, dry and sunny, with highs of about 26°C to 28°C. From about November to February the strong south-easterly wind, the Cape Doctor, often blows. Winter, from May to August, brings cold fronts, rain and highs of about 17°C to 19°C, with June usually the wettest month. Spring and autumn are mild, with clear, calm days.
  • The Kruger and the north-eastern bushveld (summer rainfall): winter, from May to September, is the dry season: sunny days of about 23°C to 27°C, chilly early mornings that can drop to 5°C, thin bush and animals gathered at the rivers and waterholes. Summer, from November to March, is hot and green, often above 35°C, with afternoon thunderstorms, newborn animals and superb birding. October is hot and dry as the season turns.
  • Malaria (Kruger area): the risk is low for most of the year, and highest from about November to April, during the rains. More on this below.

The single most useful thing to know: when Cape Town is wet, the bushveld is dry, and the other way round. The shoulder months, when both are good at once, are the sweet spot for a combined trip.

How to plan the classic Cape Town and safari route

Getting from Cape Town to the Kruger

Most travellers fly. Several airports serve the Kruger area, each about two to two and a half hours from Cape Town:

  • Skukuza (SZK), inside the Kruger National Park, a short drive from the private reserves of the Sabi Sand. Airlink flies non-stop from Cape Town.
  • Hoedspruit (HDS), near the private reserves of Timbavati, Klaserie and Thornybush on the Kruger's western edge.
  • Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), near Mbombela (Nelspruit), with flights from Airlink and FlySafair, handy for the southern Kruger and the Malelane area.

Schedules change with the seasons, so we match your flights and road transfers to the lodge you choose. If you live in Gauteng and are flying in from home, the Kruger is also about a five-hour drive from Johannesburg.

How long to spend, and in which order

For most travellers, three or four nights in Cape Town and three or four nights on safari is the right balance, so seven to nine nights in all. Many people like to start with the safari, while they are full of energy for 5am game drives, and finish with Cape Town's restaurants, beaches and the Winelands. Either way round works; we plan the order around the best flights.

Add two or three nights if you would like to visit the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, or to drive part of the Garden Route: our guide to the best time for a Garden Route and Winelands tour shows how to plan it.

The Kruger National Park or a private reserve?

The Kruger National Park is one of Africa's great wildlife areas, and ideal for self-drive safaris from SANParks rest camps, with guided drives available too. The private reserves on its western boundary share open, unfenced borders with the park, so the wildlife roams freely between them. There, your ranger and tracker drive in an open vehicle, can leave the road to follow animals and offer night drives, and the lodges include meals and two game drives a day. Malaria and your safari dates

The Kruger and its neighbouring reserves are a low-risk malaria area. According to SANParks, the risk is highest from November to April, during the summer rains, and lower in the dry winter months. Cases among visitors are rare, but it is worth planning for:

  • Speak to a doctor or travel clinic about whether you should take anti-malaria tablets, especially for travel between November and April.
  • Avoid bites at any time of year: use repellent, wear long sleeves in the evenings and sleep under a net or in a screened room.
  • Children under five, pregnant travellers and anyone with a weak immune system are usually advised to choose a malaria-free reserve instead.

South Africa has excellent malaria-free safari areas: Madikwe and Pilanesberg in the North West, the Waterberg in Limpopo, and the private reserves of the Eastern Cape, near Gqeberha. The Eastern Cape reserves are an especially easy add-on to a Cape Town trip: they are a short flight from Cape Town, or the natural end point of a Garden Route drive.

The best time for a Cape Town and safari combo, for your kind of trip

Best for first-time safari-goers: May to October

The dry winter months bring the most reliable game viewing in the Kruger: the grass is short, the trees lose their leaves and animals gather at the water. Pair it with Cape Town in September or October, or accept a rainy day or two in Cape Town in June to August: there is plenty to do on a wet day in the city and the Winelands.

Best for honeymooners: September to November, and April to May

For couples, the shoulder months are hard to beat: a private lodge with a plunge pool overlooking a waterhole, then Cape Town's restaurants, sunsets at Camps Bay and a few nights in the Winelands. These months are warm enough for evenings outside, and quieter than the festive season.

Best for families: the spring and autumn school holidays

The spring break (2 to 10 October 2027) is ideal: dry, excellent game viewing in the Kruger and warm, mostly dry days in Cape Town. The autumn school holidays (20 March to 5 April 2027) are good too, though malaria risk in the Kruger is still higher at this time.

The winter school holidays (26 June to 19 July 2027) bring the best game viewing of the year, but cold game drives, wet weather in Cape Town and full SANParks camps, so book early. The December holidays (from 12 December 2026) are peak season in Cape Town and malaria season in the Kruger: with young children, we usually suggest a malaria-free reserve in the Eastern Cape or Madikwe instead. Many lodges set minimum ages for game drives, so ask us which ones welcome children.

Best for whales and wildflowers: August to October

From about June to November, southern right whales come close to the shore around Hermanus, about an hour and a half from Cape Town, with September and October usually the best months. From about August to September, the West Coast National Park and Namaqualand burst into colour with spring wildflowers. Add a safari, and this is a truly spectacular time for a South African holiday.

Best for photography and birding: November to March

The green season is beautiful: lush bush, dramatic storm skies, baby animals from about November to December, and migrant birds in their breeding colours. Game is harder to spot in the thick bush and the malaria risk is higher, but the light and the scenery are superb.

Best for value: May to August, and January to March outside the holidays

Cape Town's hotels are at their cheapest in the winter months, while many private safari lodges offer lower green-season rates in the summer outside the school holidays. Ask us for current specials, or browse the latest offers in our Deal Seeker.

When to avoid, and why it still might be fine

Mid-December to mid-January is the busiest and most expensive time in Cape Town, and it falls in the hot, wet, higher-malaria season in the Kruger. The weather in Cape Town is glorious, though, so if you travel then, book early and consider a malaria-free reserve for the safari.

June to August is wet and cold in Cape Town, with occasional days when the cable car does not run. But the bushveld is at its very best, and it is easy to make the safari the focus of the trip, with a shorter Cape Town stay.

Easter and the school holidays fill SANParks camps and the best lodges months ahead. Whenever you go, make sure your travel insurance is in place, with medical cover for remote areas.

Planning your Cape Town and safari holiday

A few practical notes so nothing catches you out:

  • Park fees. The Kruger National Park charges a daily conservation fee, with lower rates for South African residents. A SANParks Wild Card can save money if you visit national parks often. Private reserves usually include their own fees in the lodge rate, or charge a small levy.
  • Gate times. Kruger gates and rest-camp gates open and close at set times, which change with the season. Plan your drive so you are inside a camp before the gates close.
  • Packing. Bring warm layers for early-morning and evening drives in winter, a hat and sunscreen all year, neutral-coloured clothing and binoculars. Light aircraft to lodge airstrips usually limit you to a soft bag.
  • Health. Talk to a travel clinic about malaria, especially between November and April. There are no other special vaccinations needed for travel within South Africa.
  • Travel insurance. Comprehensive cover, including medical evacuation from remote areas and flight delays, is worth having. Arrange travel insurance before you go.
  • Visitors from abroad. If friends or family are joining you from overseas, they can check their entry requirements on our visa and entry information page.
  • Checklist. Our travel checklist for South Africans covers documents, money and packing for any trip.
